Buzz 46: Shamita Shetty & Rakesh Bapat Call It Quits (& 6 Tips On How To Overcome A Breakup)

Rumours have it that the Mohabbatein actress Shamita Shetty and her boyfriend Rakesh Bapat have ended their much-hyped relationship. The couple were contestants in the television reality show Bigg Boss 16 and had started dating immediately after. Shamita missing his company after Rajesh got evicted from the show made it to Page 3 headlines. She had also expressed her wish to get married to him while she was still a contestant there. In sharp contrast, Rakesh had always been very reserved with his opinions about getting married right away. It seemed like he preferred taking it slow, especially after his divorce.

However, their relationship hasn’t exactly been a whirlwind romance. There was always news of their breakup every now and then. In the midst of it all, there were frequent pictures of the couple dining out together, often accompanied by her mother. Very recently, Rakesh has also purchased a luxurious apartment in a plush Mumbai suburb, which marked his return to the big city after having left it for Pune post his divorce. However, it looks like even consistent efforts from both their ends couldn’t hold the relationship together.

6 Tips To Overcome A Breakup

Here are 6 tips for you to #BeALittleMore proactive with getting over a breakup.

1. Give Yourself Time

Jumping back into the dating scene is the one of the biggest mistakes that you can make when you are just out of a relationship.

Jumping back into the dating scene is the one of the biggest mistakes that you can make when you are just out of a relationship. The memories are still fresh in your mind and the emotions are still very raw. Stay with your feelings for some time and give yourself time to heal – mentally and emotionally. Hopping onto a new relationship would actually take you away from the natural healing process and are most likely to have a detrimental effect on your future relationships. It would mean that the raw feelings would stay hidden somewhere at the back of your mind and will eventually show its ugly head in other relationships.

2. Stay Away From Your Ex

This will allow you the much-needed space away from him – the physical, emotional, and mental space required for you to heal.

Some hate keeping in touch with their exes, while some others get back to being friends after a while. Whatever be the kind of person you are, try avoiding your ex and flush him out of your life at least till the time you’ve healed completely. This will allow you the much-needed space away from him – the physical, emotional, and mental space required for you to heal. This will enable you to show some self-love and self-nurturing to remind yourself that YOU matter.

3. Keep Yourself Pre-Occupied At All Times

…do anything that you know you love doing – cook, paint, go for a run. Anything.

That will of course be a challenge, we understand. But all you can do is try to keep yourself busy throughout the day for your emotional and mental wellbeing. That’s what you must at least try doing for your sake. If you don’t keep yourself busy, you are bound to indulge in self-pity. A few days of sadness and then a few days of surrender, followed by a couple of days of uncontrollable anger till you fall into sadness again and the whole vicious circle will continue for days on end. Instead, do anything that you know you love doing – cook, paint, go for a run. Anything. Pick up the hobby that you haven’t pursued for ages or even pick up a new hobby. After all, an empty mind is a devil’s workshop, remember?

4. Entertain Yourself

Get yourself a bowl full of popcorn or any other favourite snack and watch movies on a loop.

Get yourself a bowl full of popcorn or any other favourite snack and watch movies on a loop. It may be a series of your favourite pick-me-up movies or the crappiest movies that you never thought you would ever watch. But, hey, even those movies can be fun in a weird way, right? Anything to keep your mind away from your ex, get a good laugh, and have a great time. And, oh, steer clear of the romantic ones. Because, you know why! Not just that, listen to music whenever you are alone and find yourself inching close to old memories with your ex, even a wee bit close to them. Put the music on, sing out loud and groove to the beats, so that you don’t give your mind the opportunity to replay the old memories.

5. Chill Out With Friends

…now’s the time to reclaim those precious old days and spend some valuable time chilling with those friends.

Being in a relationship often makes you move away from friends with whom you hangout with regularly before getting into a relationship. But now’s the time to reclaim those precious old days and spend some valuable time chilling with those friends. Relive the old times by visiting the places you often visited back then and also try all the new places in town. But, again, keep your distance from the places that were the favourite hangout spots with your ex. If you’re too tired and would just prefer to vent it out, simply catching up with each other within the comforts of your home. Or, do a nice mix of hanging outside at times and chilling out at home at other times. Friends doesn’t necessarily mean people you’ve met in school, college or workplaces. Your family members are also your friends, aren’t they? So devote more time to them too. When you’re in the company of your favourite people, time just flies.

6. Sleep It Off

It invigorates your senses, powers your tired mind, revitalises your body, and eases out your pain.

Nothing like sleep, the lazy bums would say. But, on a serious note, sleep definitely has medicinal effects. It invigorates your senses, powers your tired mind, revitalises your body, and eases out your pain. Remember, this phase is all about healing and self-preservation. So while you catch up on sleep, don’t forget to eat healthy and at regular intervals. When you are going through a breakup, eating unhealthy food is a coping up mechanism for many. It’s okay to give in at times, but ensure that you eat healthy most of the time. For your own good. Convince yourself that punishing yourself and letting yourself go will do you no good. Most importantly, is it even worth harming yourself for someone who isn’t worth it?

Here are just a few steps to help yourself cope from the after-effects of a breakup. Stay true to yourself and embrace your company and you will soon find yourself getting back to a life that you want for yourself.
