Decorating with vases is one of the easiest ways to add effortless style to your home. With vases, you can show off your fresh floral arrangements, display beautiful artificial botanicals or simply let the piece shine on its own. Incorporating house plants and flowers into the home enhances our connection to nature and has a positive impact on our mental well-being.

Flower vases have been around since we first started to bring in plants and flowers to decorate our homes. They come in so many different forms that trying to find the perfect one for your space can get confusing. Following are some guidelines you can consider while choosing the right vase for your space.

The Channel 46 caught up with the Founder of The Decor Kart, Nihal Kalra, who lists the most essential factors you should consider while selecting the perfect vases for your precious home.

3 Factors To Consider While Purchasing A Vase

1. Location

3 Zaroori Factors To Consider While Selecting a Vase

If you are planning to decorate a rather large area, say a living room, a floor vase or a set of floor vases should be ideal. They will look beautiful in a corner of a room and can be accessorised with tall branches or flowers in them.

If you are looking at decorating a bookshelf, cabinet, console or coffee table – a small vase with an eccentric colour can do the job. Not only will it add a pop of colour, it will look amazing with a fresh flower arrangement.

If you’re going to display the vase in a space with moisture – a bathroom or a powder bathroom – go for a vase not prone to corrosion. A ceramic or fibre vase should work well for years to come.

Ensure that the vase doesn’t obstruct other elements of décor. For example, if you place it in front of the bathroom mirror, it should be short enough to still let you see yourself in the mirror without any inconveniences.

On a coffee table, a flower arrangement will often be seen from above so take time to consider what it looks like from this view. Alternatively, keep a flower arrangement low on a dining table, so that it doesn’t intrude on your social and dining area.

2. Shape Of The Vase

Different vase shapes offer different qualities. Understand different vase shapes and see what works for you best –

Bud Vases

Bud vases are great for displaying single stems such as a beautiful rose from the garden. These small vases come in a variety of shapes – from small milk bottles and  glass jars to round vases and more abstract forms. Just a single stem is needed for a bud  vase.

Round Vases

Round and fishbowl vases make for a classic arrangement. They are perfect for florals with large heads like hydrangeas, peonies, and roses.

Jug Vases

Jugs and bottles make beautiful vases. They come in a broad range of shapes and sizes, allowing for versatile styling and arrangements. Glass bottle vases look great in a contemporary space while ceramic pitchers make beautiful country garden style arrangements.

Column Vases

Tall column vases are for long stemmed flowers. They can even be styled with branches, foliage and twigs as the cylindrical column shape helps them keep their structure.

3. Style

A sculptural minimalistic monochrome vase can give the feeling of a Scandinavian-inspired design. A gilded, heavily illustrated vase can give a feeling of Victorian design. A glass or crystal vase with sharp lines can give your space a modern feel.

A vase can feature an eye-catching, sculptural form in which case it would stand out regardless of the type of flowers you display in it. Highlight its beauty with the right lighting or by placing it in a strategic spot.

The space should reflect your mood and personality. No matter what your overall decor theme is, you can add elements that reflect your tastes and interests. A sculptural minimalistic monochrome vase can give the feeling of a Scandinavian-inspired design. A gilded, heavily illustrated vase can give a feeling of Victorian design. A glass or crystal vase with sharp lines can give your space a modern feel.

The best part about vases is – they are no fuss and low on commitment. Instead of spending heavily to give your space a rejuvenation, just change your vases and freshen up your space to give it a new avatar.

3 DIY Cleaning Hacks For Your Vases

1. Baking Soda & Vinegar

  • Take hot water in the vase.
  • Sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda for a medium-sized vase. Adjust the quantity of baking soda as per the size of your vase.
  • Next, sprinkle 5 tablespoons of white vinegar to create the frizz that will dissolve all the dirt and stains on the inner surface of your vase.

2. Vinegar & Salt

  • Mix 1 tablespoon each of salt and vinegar to form a paste.
  • Rub this paste on the stain that you want to remove with a soft washcloth.
  • Let this sit for about 10 minutes and then scrub it off with the same wash cloth or a soft toothbrush till the stains are no longer visible.

3. Crushed Eggshells

  • Crush eggshells with your hand or with a fork, to sizes less than an inch each – small enough to fit through the neck of your vases.
  • Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water inside the vases.
  • Close the mouth of the vases with the palm of your hand and shake well to clean the dirt inside.
  • This remedy is useful to remove surface diet and is not likely to be effective for removing stubborn stains.
